The Argent Mortgage trade show video is found on You Tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mF_awDWrtSk&feature=PlayList&p=067863233E55A8CD&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=10 The video is an example of a trade show video that uses a full view narrator as a center piece of the video.
After a short motion graphic and musical intro, this video introduces a full view narrator. Our initial impression of her is likely to be positive, and is very supportive of the belief that a full view narrator can be an appropriate integrating device for a trade show, sales or marketing video.
The narrator in this video is an attractive, well dressed young woman, who speaks well. As a character, she is easy to relate to, and a viewer will immediately decide that he will enjoy watching the video and listening to the her for the next 1-3 minutes.
Subsequently, the video is a bit problematical, and illustrates the challenges and potential pit falls of using a full view narrator. As the centerpiece of the video, the narrator becomes the symbol of the corporation. People’s impression of her will be there take home impression of the company. From this perspective the video should be designed so that it is easy for viewers to focus on her, her voice, and her words about the company.
On the other hand, there is a desire to present extra material about the company via captions, diagrams, images and motion graphics. This additional information can be conducive to listening to the narrator’s words or not.
In the first sequence, the narrator tells us that “There are many brokers out there.” As she states these words, a geometrical arrangement of multiple brokers appears in the background. The display is secondary and is conducive to listening to what she is saying.
As the video continues, the background, which started out as a secondarily supportive to the focus on her suddenly becomes an equal competitor. The video shifts its focus back and forth with greater and greater rapidity. It becomes more and more difficult to focus on what she is saying because of the rapid shifts.
So I would say this is a video with a strong narrator, but multiple examples of how not to integrate the background visuals with the narrator’s dialogue.

Western Geco, a world leader in oil and gas seismic surveying enlisted the help of SquareZero to make an epic 3d corporate video for their trade show marketing. The recently branded division line named ‘The Power of Q’ featured in a high impact sequences of 3d graphics to seek to draw conventioneers to their trade boot. The film was depicted on the 42 inch Philips WOW ‘auto-stereoscopic’ screen, which exhibits 3d video without the need for special glasses.
While the video is an impressive undertaking, it uses techniques which raise important questions about the production of 3D videos
Lack of Realism: While admittedly, I was only able to see the video on You Tube, and not on a special 3D screen, it still appears to lack realism., The story line is created using 3D computer graphics and not realistic shots of life which are transfomred into 3D. . Segments showing a truck rolling acorss the desert, or a ship carrying oil across the ocean utilize computer created graphics of the boat and ship. While detailed, the depiction of the boat and truck lack realism. The lack of realism will certainly translate into diminished interest in the trade show environment. The introduction, for example shows several modes of transport of oil across water, depicted simultaneously. We see a boat traversing a choppy sea while helicopters fly above the surf. The water looks realistic and might captivate viewers, however the boat and helicopter are not so realistic. Thus, the image the videographer is trying to convey of man conquering the elements as he transports natural resources across great distances is at best muted.
Lack of Credible Story Line: The most noticeable trait of the video is its length. However any noticeable story line is at best diffuse, and it would be more accurate to say the video pastes together mostly non-related segments depicting different aspects of the companies activities. The lack of cohesion, will take away from the video’s ability to draw spectators to a trade show booth, because visitors to the show are hungry for knowledge about the company, and mere sepectacular 3D images will only attract their attention for a short time before the novelty wears off. We see multiple shots of a boat transporting oil from an off shore oil well. Then we see a shot of a man inspecting something presumably related to the discovery of natural gas deposits, which are depicted as an abstract display of colored lights arranged in a non-realistic form. Subsequent segments of the video contain numerous motion graphic effects. Oil pipelines with regulators are depicted in patterned graphic displays, which sit on rounded slabs of earth like colored discs, which are apparently meant to convey the vast distances being traversed by the pipelines. The various segments are put together with no obvious plot line in mind. The result is a trade show video 3D trade show video which is confusing to follow, somewhat boring because of its length, and just plain uninteresting to begin with.
Lack of cohesive narrative The video does employ occasional subtitles which give a sense of company activity. However, the text is vague and suggestive rather than specific and it is unclear how much informatrion it will convey to a spectator only mildly informed about the company. . Single words like “carbonate,” “source and steamer steering,” “continuous line acquisition,” tell the viewer all too little about the company. And anyone not totally familiar with the company’s activities might well lose the entire sense of their meaning.
While the video has many deficiencies it points out what needs to be done to unleash the power of 3d trade show videos. 3D material should be depicted realistically enough to captivate the viewer. The video should conveys a story line, even something simple like the production of the company’s product from raw materials to delivery, and then it will have the ability to hold audience attention. While trade show video needn’t tell everything about a product or service, what information is imparted should be done so in a way that is understandable to the average viewer being targeted by the video.

Putting a web video on page one of your web site, is not about information, it is not about product presentation, it is about trust establishment. As this article will explain, giving surfers a chance to see you, the owner, face to face in a web video, will immediately begin to establish trust in you, and facilitate their decision to want to do business with you
It may be a rude surpirse to know that people can have turst in someone who is unethical or even criminal. Having trust is more about believing in another person. . However, the degree to which one person trusts another is a reflection of belief in the other person’s honesty, fairness and benevolence. Important for establishing initial trust in business is that fact that a failure in trust is more easily forgiven if it is due to t a failure in competence rather than a lack of benevolence or honesty. As a result, sometimes a business providing, at least temporarily, inferior services may fare better with their customers than a company providing superior services, if people feel the first company is honest and means well.
From a philosophical persepctive, trust is defined as a heuristic decision process or rule, which allows another person to process un otherwise complex situation in away that avoids unrealistic efforts in rational thoought. . Lets break this definition down. Heuristic processes are trial and error approaches to problem solving which begin with the most accessible solution, and go on to another solution, only if the first solution doesn’t solve the problem. What this means in terms of business is that if a customer finds himself interacting with a business owner that he intrinsically wishes to trust, because the owner appears benevolent, good natured and well meaning. Then the customer will prefer to trust the owner and do business rather than get involved into complex rational thought about what might go wrong in the business relationship.
And now, what does this have to do with putting a video on page one of your web site. And here’s the answer. When a surfer goes onto a new web site, and thinks about doing business with someone he’s never met, he can rapidly be won over by a short online video of the owner talking with him. If he likes the look and personality of the owner than he will immediately wish to trust him and do business, because that will be the easiest solution for him to take.
And this realization leaves us with one more important take away lesson. A front page video needn’t trouble itself with a description of company services or products. It just has to provide a reason for the surfer to trust the owner. A short 40 second passionate description, by the owner saying that he established the family potato chip business 30 years ago because he wanted to provide people with a crispy chip that wouldn’t lose its favor in the package, will win trust right away.
