Two Joysticks to Beat Smartphones at Games

Portable gaming devices have plenty of reason to sulk in the corner. The job they once dominated—rescuing people from boredom while on the go—is now done by smartphones and devices like the iPod Touch. Smartphones offer casual games like “Angry Birds” and “Words with Friends” that cost little or nothing to download, and also make phone calls, and send email and text messages.

Sony

Sony’s PS Vita is the first portable game to come with two joysticks; on the screen, apps are represented by playful bubblelike icons.

This week I tested the newest gaming device that tries to do many of the things a smartphone does, short of making phone calls: Sony’s PlayStation Vita. It has front- and back-facing cameras; a Web browser; a store for downloading movies, TV shows and games; a music player; and an optional ATT 3G network connection. This spring, Sony plans to add its own music-streaming service, Facebook, Skype and Foursquare. Netflix, Flickr and Twitter apps are slated to work on the device on Wednesday, when it’s available in stores. All these features are still secondary to the main reason a person might plunk down $299 (3G and Wi-Fi capable) or $249 (Wi-Fi) for this device: gaming.

Sony’s PS Vita is the latest move by a portable-game maker to gain some ground back from smartphones. Nintendo’s 3DS, which I reviewed last March, now has a Netflix app and other smartphone characteristics. The company also plans to add Hulu Plus to the 3DS later this year.

Not surprisingly, I found the PS Vita did best with games and pretty well with the programs over which it seemed to have the most control. Other features seemed like they were added just for the sake of adding them and didn’t work nearly as well.

The PS Vita’s pre-loaded Near app has a whimsical interface that showed 28 people near me who were signed into the PlayStation Network. The PS Store

Sideburn mounts your iPhone via Mac SD card slot

Keep your
iPhone at eye level with the Sideburn, a small mount that takes advantage of the neglected SD card slot on your
Mac.

Sure, your iPhone looks like a growth, but at least it’s handy.

Remember that “X-Files” episode when the guy had his own brother growing out of him as a detachable parasitic twin? You can get the same effect with your iPhone and a Mac thanks to the under-used SD card slot and a new Kickstarter project.

The iPhone is a fairly dainty device, but it still needs a helping hand to fit into an SD card slot. That is where the Sideburn comes in.

The Sideburn is a small mount that plugs into the SD slot on an iMac or MacBook to keep your iPhone in a usable place. You won’t have to tear your eyes away from your big screen to check your new messages or catch an incoming call.

You also won’t risk losing your iPhone to the voracious stack of papers that has been collecting on your desk for the last five years.

The mount is made from aluminum to match the look of your other Apple products. It swivels around for an adjustable viewing angle.

The Sideburn is in fundraising mode on Kickstarter with an ambitious $35,000 goal. A $35 pledge will get you a dock of your own, should the project reach its goal. Just be sure to check that your particular Mac has an SD card slot available.

New music: Rihanna and Chris Brown reunite on record (twice)

The much-rumoured collaboration between Rihanna and Chris Brown is now out there for the world to hear. In fact, it’s not just one song, but two.

Rihanna recruited Brown to appear on a remix to her song ‘Birthday Cake’ while Brown enlisted Rihanna on a remix to his ‘Turn Up the Music’ single. As Chris Brown’s appearance at the Grammys last week caused plenty of mixed reactions, the release of these songs with the ex-girlfriend he physically assaulted and beat a few years ago is bound to cause a stir. Listen to the songs below and judge for yourself.

If you weren’t completely distracted by Justin Timberlake’s scene-stealing impersonation of Bon Iver on Saturday Night Live over the weekend, it’s worth noting that Brooklyn noise-pop duo Sleigh Bells were the show’s musical guests playing two new songs from their latest album Reign of Terror.

You can stream the whole new Sleigh Bells album over at The New York Times.

Whitney Houston was laid to rest on the weekend and newly Juno-nominated Robin Thicke, son of Alan, has released a tribute to the late singer. Thicke has released his version of Exhale (Shoop Shoop) from the movie Waiting to Exhale.

And finally, the Guardian will be premiering a new song each day from Bruce Springsteen’s new album Wrecking Ball over the next few days. Check out the first song in the series.

In Production: A New Production and Post Video Blog

In Production: A New Production and Post Video Blog

There’s a new view blog/web series that I’ve recently added to my watch list. Called In Production it’s a product of Carey Dissmore and Steve Oakley. There may be too much online video content to follow already but I’m keeping an eye on In Production, as I’ve had both Carey and Steve’s traditional blogs in my RSS reader for quite a while. I finally met Carey in person at NAB a couple of years ago while attending the incredibly fun MediaMotion Ball and have enjoyed his insights on Twitter as well. I’ve never met Steve but his posts on Tameron lenses helped me make the decision to put one of those into my camera bag. The first topic in their new series is a detailed look at DaVinci Resolve and two episodes are now posted. You can grab a feed for the show at the In Production YouTube channel.

Hopefully the hosts won’t leave their day jobs and pursue careers as stand-up comedian. There’s some good information here, especially for experienced editors new to Resolve. I look forward to upcoming topics.
